Madonna King encourages girls to write their own story

On Thursday 8 March more than 200 people in the community including mothers, students (including some from Trinity College), grandmothers and staff enjoyed a wonderful breakfast to celebrate International Women's Day. Guests were there to hear from Madonna King, award-winning journalist, author and commentator.  She shared her research regarding fourteen year old girls and what impacts their lives and the challenges they face.  Her book, Being 14 deals with these issues.  Madonna spoke of the need for girls to be listened to and really heard by their families.  The fear of disappointing parents especially their mothers, is on the mind of many young women.  The ability to make different friends and move between groups is a characterisitic many student leaders have and something Madonna believes girls need to aspire to.  It was a very enlightening presentation and we are grateful to the P&F for sponsoring the event.
